D. Sonny Walter
Mr. Walter was born and raised in Freeman, SD. He graduated from Freeman High School in 1979. After that, he attended and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
He then attended and graduated from the University South Dakota School of Law in 1989. He was licensed and admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of South Dakota in October of the same year. From 1989 to 1996, he worked for the Minnehaha County Public Defender’s Office in Sioux Falls, SD.
In 1996, Mr. Walter was admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota. He has tried many misdemeanor and felony cases throughout his career. He held the record with the Minnehaha County Public Defender’s Office for the most jury trial wins until 2006. He won every misdemeanor case he tried for 14 years. Mr. Walter has also won most of the felony cases he has tried.
Since 1996, Mr. Walter has owned and operated his private practice. He focused mainly on criminal defense, handling a wide variety of cases as stated in the Practice Areas link above.
From 1999 to 2017, Mr. Walter was contracted by the Governor of the State of South Dakota and the Secretary of Corrections to assist inmates incarcerated in various prisons. These included those in the Sioux Falls, Springfield, and Yankton prisons. He assisted on various matters such as appeals, habeas corpus, parole issues, prison conditions, and more.
Max Walter was born and raised in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Washington High School in 2012. Max attended and graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2016. Following undergraduate, Max attended law school at the University of South Dakota School of law. In May 2020, Max graduated and joined the Walter Law Office as a full-time member of the firm. He was licensed and admitted to practice in December that same year by the Supreme Court of South Dakota.
During his time at law school, Max interned for his father and the Minnehaha County Public Defender’s Office where he assisted on misdemeanor and felony cases. Max works closely with Sonny Walter on misdemeanor and felony cases. Max’s practice includes family law and criminal defense.
